Sound code: music is a sound code and the type of music in a text that can convey a great deal of information, about the mood and tone of the text. Such as tension and emotions that can be helped by the music. For example in the film "Taken" as the actor picks up his phone he talks and explains his skills against his enemy as he says this slow hard based music plays which makes the scene seem dark and serious, the character then says "I will kill you" the music suddenly stops this making the scene look like a thriller as also the low-key lighting helps portray it.
Non-diegetic sound: Which is not in the 'the film world' for example sound effects, voice over or backgrounds. For example in the film "Inception" music is heard in the background while the fight scene takes place which the audience know in the real world music would not play while a fight scene for someones life takes place.

Rhythm: rhythm of the music can dictate the rhythm of cuts, such as in fight scenes to create tension. For example in "Transformers" the music is slow paced to suit the seriousess of the scene as the two actors look confused as they see the car appear infront of them, once the tow characters enter the car the sound changes into a fast paced rhythm which shows a fast dangerous car chase.
Silence: Creates tension as the audience can’t tell what is now happening with the narrative of the film. The combination of a shot and the use of silence can cause self-conscious responses from the audience, build up our attention, and make us worried.
Voice over narration: when dialogue is added on in the editing stage and it is usually used to explain things that have already happened. This is used in "Fight Club" as in this scene below we hear the off-screen sound of the actor talking about the situation he is in.
Sound bridge: sound can be used as a bridge to maintain continuity in a sequence by running a soundtrack under a series of images to link them together, or to create transition from one scene to another. For example in this scene from "Scarface" it shows many shots used in a scene from tracking, mid-shots, zooms, long shot, ect; by playing music from one shot across a cut to another shot it makes the scene look uninterrupted.
Parallel: is when the sound you hear in a film is what is expected for example a scene of children playing on the beach the parallel sounds the audience would expect to hear would be sounds of laughter, talking and the sea. A film example would be 'Way of The Dragon' from the start of this scene we hear nothing from the men in the stand off but only body actions, movement, and the noise of a cat in the scene. This makes the audience pay attention to the scene by not being distracted.
Contrapuntal sound: is when the sound doesn't match the expectations of what you are viewing an example of this is 'Jaws'. The scenes of the beach are accompanied by contrapuntal sound of the theme tune 'dur dur' which doesn't fit with the happy images. The purpose of music: there are many different ways in which music used in films, but the main purpose of music is to create different moods, tonnes and emotions. Also it can help the audience to understand a scene in more detail too.

In this task I will listen to the following scenes and identify all the sounds that I hear.
Se7en |
Type of sound | Descriptions of sound | Describe the mood it creates |
Silence | Silent | Builds up tension and suspense. |
Parallel | Two men having a discussion of murder | Builds up tension |
Diegetic | Sounds of street/city. As you can hear rain, vehicles, and people | Normal moment. |
Flight Plane |
Type of sound | Descriptions of sound | Describe the mood it creates |
Non-Diegetic | Electronic futuristic sounds/ sound effects | Sounds sharp and intense. |
Parallel | Audience can hear two people talking in the background. | Makes the audience feel as if the two having a private discussion or are located in another country due to the two people speaking in a different language. |
Contrapuntal sound | In the background you can hear the crows and wind. | Makes the audience feel as if the characters are located in an empty area for example a graveyard or empty town. |
This is a analysis of sound in films by using Point Evidence Explain And Relate Flight Plane
Mission Impossible 2:
| ||
Point | Evidence | Explain | Relate |
Non-diegetic sounds | Builds up at the opening scene seeming calm | Makes the film seem calm at first with a normal man, then speeds up as we see the helicopter. | Film looks calm but changes instantly once he reaches the top. This makes him look big and strong towards the film this representation is conventional as the film is a action film and by having him look strong after climbing the mountain he makes the audience feel that he is a strong and bold action hero |
Anthony this post is such an improvement from your first post, you have clearly and coherently shown your understanding of how sound can be used within a thriller and the suspense it can create. You should now explain how you and your group intend to use sound within your own production. You should bring out any ideas you have being the sound person.
