This document explains the cinematography me and my group wish to use in are productoion ‘Jokes on You’.
Cinematography
Establishing Shot will be taken on Bell Lane Enfield.
Why it is used?
This is shown to make the audience notify where the scene is located. In addition to make the audience understand where the film is set as in a suburban area and how it looks as the natural lighting from the sun set makes the shot look dark and mysterious.
How it is related to a thriller?
By the opening sequence showing an establishing shot of a dark uncanny house it builds a climax of suspense in the scene because it causes the audience wanting to see more of the scene.
Film usage
In the film ‘Panic Room’ the same technique is used to express a strange eerie feeling of the city by also the help of dramatic music creates trepidation.
Cinematography
Long shot/zoom in shown at Bell Lane
Why it is used?
This shot is used to express the props and characters in the scene as the shot displays the surroundings of the house and characters as the zoom in takes place in this action.
How it is related to a thriller?
This relates to a thriller because the long shot and use of zooming in within it creates excitement and thrill as the shot zooms in slowly creating suspense.
Film usage
In the film ‘House Party’ they use the technique on a long shot which zooms in also, as it zooms in from a long shot of the house and then zooms into the door, creating excitement and interest.
Cinematography
Tracking shot used inside the house stairway
Why it is used?
This shot will be used as it will show the actor taking the baby to bed walking towards and up the stairs, making the audience noticing where the actor is going.
How it is related to a thriller?
This relates as the audience feel that they are moving with character towards her location, causing suspense and excitement.
Film usage
‘GOODFELLAS’ shows a shot of Henry Hill taking Karen inside the Copacaba, which shows the surrounding and fellow gangsters which creates tension.
Cinematography
Long shot /zoom in used inside the baby’s room.
Why it is used?
This shot is used to show the action taking place inside the room and what props are within the room for example toys, cot, and clown.
How it is related to a thriller?
The shot is used to draw in the audience to the dark room this creates mystery and builds up suspense. The audience see the character put the baby in the cot as we see a zoom in slightly takes place as she does this.
Film usage
‘KILL BILL Volume 1’ this shot adds suspense to the scene as the music also plays a strong role to create a climax.
Cinematography
Tracking shot/high angle shown in the living room and star
Why it is used?
This shot is used from the top of the stairway as the high angles shows the character sitting down then suddenly standing up and going up stairs, which the tracking shot follows her movement in the scene.
How it is related to a thriller?
Thriller scenes can often begin by panning or tracking a room showing the surroundings of objects that explain plot elements.
Film usage
‘KILL BILL Volume 1’, this shot shows a full tracking long shot of the characters movement, showing her surroundings.
Cinematography
Medium long shot taken on the stairway
Why it is used?
This shot is used to show the audience that the character is making her way down stairs after putting the baby in his room.
How it is related to a thriller?
This shot makes the scene look normal but due to the edit last used (fade to black) it makes the scene look tense.
Film usage
In ‘Vertigo’ by having a medium long shot rather than a long or very long shot, the audience can still see the facial expressions on the man's face. The shot is taken from a high place, but the audience is looking straight ahead to see the man. The camera position puts the audience opposite the man, but they are still onlookers onto the situation.

Reaction shot shown in living room
Why it is used?
This shot is used to show the character jumping out of her chair, making her look shakened and worried.
How it is related to a thriller?
This builds up a climax to the scene to come as it shows her trying to get comfortable but then reacts to the baby’s monitor.
Film usage
‘Psycho’ uses many reaction shots to show the reactions of the actress getting stabbed add thrill to the scene.
Cinematography
Over shoulder shot shown in baby’s room
Why it is used?
This shot is used to show an over shoulder shot of the clown while the babysitter is shown in the scene holding the baby.
How it is related to a thriller?
This shot is used to create a dark airy feeling in the atmosphere to create tension as the clowns back is towards the camera and the shot sees the babysitter on the right side of the frame holding the baby it creates suspense as if the babysitter is being watched by the clown.
Film usage
‘Play Misty for Me’ uses this shot to make the scene look tense and dramatic as the audience see the male look at the woman who looks naked as we see her from a over shoulder.
